What is Crown Green Bowling?

Crown Green Bowling is a traditional and popular sport, particularly in the North of England and the Midlands. It’s a game of skill, strategy, and precision, played on a specially prepared “crown green” which has a raised center, or “crown,” that slopes away to the edges. This unique contour adds an exciting dimension to the game, as players must account for the varying gradients.

How to Play Crown Green Bowling:

The objective of Crown Green Bowling is to roll your bowls (biased balls) as close as possible to a smaller target ball called the “jack.”

  1. The Mat and Jack: The game begins with a player placing a mat on the green and delivering the jack from it. The jack must travel a minimum distance to be in play.
  2. Delivering the Bowls: Players then take turns delivering their bowls. Each bowl has a bias, meaning it will curve as it rolls. The skill lies in using this bias, along with the contours of the green, to get your bowl closest to the jack.
  3. Ends and Scoring: Once all bowls have been delivered, the player or team with bowls closest to the jack scores points. An “end” is complete when all bowls have been played. The game continues for a set number of ends or until a certain score is reached.
  4. The “Crown”: The unique crown shape of the green means that bowls delivered from the center will roll downhill, and those delivered from the edges will roll uphill towards the center. This adds a fascinating strategic element to every shot.
